Vintage Helmets

Vintage Helmets

I know why vintage helmets are all the rage as collectibles these days - they are incredibly cool looking - and they can be worth a lot of money, too!

Now, don’t forget that these neat, old vintage helmets are really mainly for looks – there’s absolutely no way that these old brain buckets are safe to use today – for a couple of reasons. In the first place, the materials that these vintage helmets were made of in the day were never as strong as our modern materials. And, the materials do degrade over time. That meant never, ever wear a vintage helmet, expecting it to protect your hear - looks only!

The helmets that I like the best just might be a vintage motorcycle helmet. I really like the old cop helmets from the 1950's, with the little visor in front. I always thought they looked sharp on those old black-and-white TV shows from the '50's. To ride my motorcycle, I chose a completely modern helmet for safety - I wasn't about to take a chance on the safety of my head! The old helmets sure are fun to look at though, especially a Vintage 1979 Bell Motorcycle Helmet with red RT Decal Stripes. These vintage helmets flat out look fantastic!

A vintage football helmet just may be one of the neatest and most aesthetically pleasing helmets ever made! Of course, the protection your head got from these old leather-covered helmets was probably not much, but it looked terrific! If you like the old movies from the 1930’s and 1940’s, you'll see tons of these old football helmets.

How about a vintage fire helmet from the turn of the century (1900, that is)? Did you know that the really old one are made mostly from leather? Yep – they didn’t have high-strength plastics in those days (or any real plastic, for that matter), so the helmets were made of leather, with some steel and brass reinforcements, as the letters and numbers were embossed in the the leather itself. Cool.

Of course, many vintage fire helmets didn't survive because leather deteriorates if not cared for properly - it just gets old. But, a lot of these vintage helmets did survive the years, and are available even today!

Vintage helmets are one of my favorite collectibles, and you have a good chance even today of finding one of these old gems for yourself!
